Sewage at the floor drain means the path between your house and the main has failed one of two ways — and in Toledo, which way matters more than almost anywhere. First, this hour:
Stop using water — every flush and cycle feeds the backup. Keep people and pets out of standing sewage. Kill power to affected outlets at the breaker if water is near them. Photograph everything before cleanup — for your insurer, and because the City’s grant process (below) runs on documentation. Then call.
If it backs up during heavy rain and especially if neighbors see it too, you’re likely watching the combined system surcharge — the shared storm-and-sanitary pipe overwhelmed and pushing flow backward. Your lateral may be perfectly sound; the defense is a backwater valve, and after the City verifies a public-sanitary backup, its Basement Flooding Grant helps pay for exactly that (valves are the application’s stated primary focus; up to $1,500 on the standard formula, $2,000 at full cost for Homestead-exempt and HEAP/PIPP households). If it backs up in dry weather, the problem is almost certainly in your lateral — roots, grease, a collapsed section — and that diagnosis-and-repair path is yours, starting with a camera.
An auger or jetting restores the drain today; it doesn’t fix why it blocked. A second backup, or a first one whose footage shows damage, means you’re shopping for a repair, not another clearing. The contractors we refer say which honestly — with footage, not adjectives.
We’re a local referral service. Call or send the form and we’ll connect you with a City of Toledo–registered plumbing contractor who does sewer work — camera first, footage shown, quote straight. No charge to you for the referral.
